More info

This method may be used to assess the ability of a hypoid automotive axle to operate at high sliding speed, and with high impact loading, without surface distress. For use with lubricants of ''factory fill'' quality level, the gears must be new, but for use with ''service fill'' oils the gears may be new or they may be run-in to a predetermined level by a standard procedure.

The method is principally intended for use by a complete vehicle on a suitable high-speed track, but it may be used for the complete vehicle on a suitable chassis dynamometer or by the engine, transmission, and axle from the vehicle on a universal laboratory rig. The method can be used only for vehicles fitted with a manually operated gearbox, and covers only the particular axle as installed in the vehicle. Care must be taken to ensure that the type of clutch release mechanism normally employed on the vehicle is used in all cases, since hydraulically operated mechanisms will vary in characteristics from those employing mechanical linkages.
